The Buzz is a weekly summary disseminate important information about mosquitoes and mosquito control in the City of Portsmouth.

Mosquito Activity (Scale from 0 to 5)
  • City wide activity bumps up to a 2 this week due to the initial presence of West Nile Virus detected in mosquito samples.
  • Traps were mixed this week, counts will be increasing because of the rain.
  • We averaged 1.87 inches of rain last week with the rain showers.
Surveillance and Control
  • West Nile Virus was detected last week. Some of the mosquitoes collected from the Port Norfolk area of the city tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV). This represents the first positive mosquito sample in the state this year.
  • 6 CDC style light traps were set this week, a total of 570 mosquitoes were caught. The average number of mosquitoes per trap was 95. This was up some from last week.
  • 5 OFP style traps were set this week, a total of 88 tiger mosquitoes were caught. The average number of tiger mosquitoes per trap was 18. This about the same as last week. Counts will go up next week because of the rain showers.
  • 3 gravid traps were set this week, a total of 67 mosquitoes were caught. The average number of mosquitoes per trap was 22. Trap counts were 1/3 of last weeks count.
  • Control activities this week were directed to treating storm drain catch basins in Port Norfolk. The crew treated 1,141 storm drain catch basins this week. Treating storm drain catch basin efforts will continue next week.
  • Truck spraying for adults is scheduled as soon as the weather cooperates. With good weather and no mechanical problems the entire city can be sprayed in two nights.
  • Information on spray activities is posted on the Mosquito Spray Hotline (393-8666 press 1 when prompted). Citizens can call and listen to a recorded message to find out what areas are scheduled for mosquito spraying.
