THE
BUZZ
| Volume 7, 7 (Week 25) |
June 19, 2008 |
The Buzz is a weekly summary
disseminate important information about mosquitoes and mosquito
control in the City of Portsmouth.
|

Citizens are discouraged from using these corrugated drain pipe
extensions because they can produce large numbers of annoying
mosquitoes. Taken June 19, 2008 |
| Mosquito Activity (Scale from 0 to 5) |
- City wide activity remains a 1.
- In general trap counts were lower this week for a second week in
a row. Trap counts were lower partly due to the storms that moved
through the area Monday night.
|
| Surveillance and Control |
- 12 CDC style light traps were set this week, a total of 882
mosquitoes were caught. The average number of mosquitoes per trap
was 74. This was down slightly from last week, but salt marsh
mosquito counts increased in areas north of the western freeway
(164). A few extra traps were set this week to compensate for the
storms Monday night.
- 10 OFP style traps were set this week, a total of 113 tiger
mosquitoes were caught. The average number of tiger mosquitoes per
trap was 11. This was slightly lower this week. Counts are expected
to increase next week.
- 4 gravid traps were set this week, a total of 103 mosquitoes
were caught. The average number of mosquitoes per trap was 26. Trap
counts went up this week slightly, however trap numbers were again
too low to
send any mosquitoes for virus testing.
- This week efforts were focused on inspecting mosquito breeding
sites. Most areas are dry at this time, back ditches and storm
drains are the primary mosquito breeders. As of yesterday 440
inspections have been done already this month.
- A few areas in North Churchland are scheduled for spraying
tonight. Information on spray activities is posted on the Mosquito
Spray Hotline (393-8666 press 1 when prompted). Citizens can call
and listen to a recorded message to find out what areas are
scheduled for mosquito spraying.
|
| Service Requests |
- We received no service requests this week.
|
| Federal Activities |
- Corps and City staff met the middle of this week and surveyed
several areas for mosquito breeding. Any areas where we found active
mosquito breeding are being scheduled for treatments as needed.
- The Air Force aerial spray team was in spraying Langley Air
Force Base, parts of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and York
County this week June 16, 17, 18. No areas were sprayed in
Portsmouth, only about 40,000 acres were treated on the peninsula.
