THE BUZZ

Volume 5, 24   (Week 38)

September 21, 2006

Mosquito Activity (Scale from 0 to 5)
  • The city received an average of 1.14 inches of rain last week.
  • The mosquito activity has increased to a 3. The mosquito activity remains at a 3 this week due to the number of adult mosquitoes and presence of West Nile Virus and EEE in the region.
Surveillance
  • 9 CDC style light traps were set this week, a total of 3,797 mosquitoes were caught, for an average of 422 per trap. This is a significant increase in trap counts due to tropical rain from Ernesto.
  • 7 Gravid style traps were set this week, a total of 136 mosquitoes were caught, for an average of 20 per trap.
Service Requests
  • We received 17 complaint calls this week.
Control Efforts
  • Crews are continuing to monitor standing water for larvae and treat as needed.
  • Adult mosquito spraying (truck fogging) is in full swing, we have three trucks spraying each night when weather conditions are favorable. We will complete the first round of spraying the city tonight. Tomorrow we start the spraying the entire city for a second time.
Aerial Mosquito Control Efforts
  • A 1 - 2 punch to knock out mosquitoes from the air will start as early as Saturday September 23rd (weather permitting).
  • The city’s licensed aerial contractor is scheduled to use a helicopter to treat approximately 100 acres of mosquito breeding habitat starting Saturday September 23rd.
  • The U.S. Air Force Aerial Spray Team is scheduled to be in town Monday September 25th – Friday September 29th. Craney Island and portions of Portsmouth will be sprayed for adult mosquitoes some time next week.
  • The combination of aerial adulticide and larvicide operations should help to reduce mosquito populations.
  • Specific information on when areas will be treated will be posted on the city’s mosquito hotline at 393-8666 press 1 when prompted.
