| Mosquito Activity (Scale from 0 to 5) |
- We received an average of 1.91 inches of rain last week. This on
top of the inch the previous week has flooded up many mosquito
breeding areas.
- Mosquito activity is a 1 for the entire city. Trap counts are
the same as two weeks ago
|
| Surveillance |
- Ten CDC style traps were set this week and a total of 362
mosquitoes were caught, with an average of 37 mosquitoes per trap
night. With the recent rain trap counts may increase over the next
two weeks.
- Container breeding mosquitoes are on the rise. Birdbaths, tarps,
clogged rain gutters, kids toys, flowerpots, tires, etc. continue to
breed Asian Tiger mosquitoes. The only way to get rid of the
mosquitoes is to get rid of the containers.
|
| Service Requests |
- We received one complaint call about mosquitoes this week.
|
| Control |
- Staff have completed the first round of roadside ditch and catch
basin treatment for the entire city. We will continue to monitor and
treat additional areas as needed.
- There are no adult mosquito spraying operations scheduled at
this time. We have three spray trucks fully calibrated and ready to
spray if needed.
|
| Aerial Spraying |
- Tuesday, May 16, (weather permitting) Portsmouth will have a
licensed and qualified contractor flying over the city applying a
larvicide to 100 acres of standing water to control the emergence of
mosquitoes.
- Residents and beekeepers do not need to take any special
precautions. The larvicide is in dry granular form and will only be
applied to standing water. The larvicide is mosquito specific (kills
only select mosquito species) and poses no threat to humans or
animals.
- Specific times of spray activities will be posted on the
mosquito spray hotline 393-8666 early next week.
|
| Special Notes |
- Staff will set up a bug display at the Hoffler Creek Wildlife
Preserve “Bugs & Butterfly Kids Day” Saturday May 20th from 1 – 3
pm.
