THE BUZZ

Volume 5, 3   (Week 17)

April 27, 2006

Mosquito Activity (Scale from 0 to 5)
  • We received an average of 0.84 inches of rain last week. This brings us to about average for the month of April but below average for the year.
  • Mosquito activity is a 1 for the entire city. More adult mosquitoes were found this week due to warm temperatures and recent rain.
Surveillance
  • Eight CDC style traps were set this week and a total of 281 mosquitoes were caught, with an average of 35 mosquitoes per trap night. Trap number came up slightly this week but we are well below normal for this time of year.
Service Requests
  • There were no service requests this week. There have only been 6 total requests for service for 2006. Most calls are in regard to standing water or clogged ditches that have potential to breed mosquitoes.
Control
  • Staff is systematically inspecting and treating potential mosquito breeding sites thought the city. Treating of sites includes: source reduction efforts (taking steps to remove the water) and larviciding (treating the water with pesticides to prevent mosquito from successfully breeding).
  • There are no adult mosquito spraying operations scheduled at this time. Adult mosquito spray operations could start as early as next week.
Special Notes
  • We found some adult tiger mosquitoes in several locations this week. This is unusually early to see adult tiger mosquitoes in late April. Citizens must do their part to keep their yards free from anything that can hold water. Now is the time to get rid of the water around the house.
  • If you do not get rid of the water, you will have a mosquito problem all summer.
